Writing the Walled Garden

What would your ideal walled garden look like? Do you prefer order and symmetry or a splash of wildness and adventure? Fragrant flowers or fulsome fruit? Your garden is a unique expression of what you choose to make it.

Writing the Walled Garden is about personal writing for purpose and pleasure. Both writing and gardening can:

  • bring joy, satisfaction, consolation

  • offer space to try something new

  • absorb our attention and energy

  • challenge us with choices

  • involve a variety of task, approach and season

  • enable us to create something beautiful

Writing for Growth

Walled gardens have a long history. Originally situated immediately outside the large house, they grew vital food for the household in a place protected from outside intrusion.

Writing can be purposeful in nurturing our well-being. I run workshops and groups to help you grow in the different ways of doing this. You can find out more about the events I am running here.

Writing for Creativity

As the size of great estates increased, walled gardens were re-located further away from the house. Both kitchen gardens, and pleasure gardens, became more ambitious as creative projects.

Writing can similarly be done for the pleasure - and challenge - of creativity. I particularly enjoy growing poetry. I run workshops and groups to explore poetry both as creative readers and creative writers. You can find out more about the events I am running here.
